In-State Tuition Bill For Undocumented Students Moving Through Legislature

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Even as more Republicans come out against a bill to allow qualified Florida students to pay in-state college tuition rates, even if they are in the country illegally; the bill continues to make its way through the legislature.

A Senate committee on Tuesday barely approved the legislation (SB 1400) after four GOP state senators voted against the measure. The final vote was 5-4 and only survived the vote because three Democrats supported the legislation.

Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater and sponsor of the bill, says he hopes the bill will at least make it to the full Senate for an up or down vote. The legislation is a priority of House Speaker Will Weatherford and a House version is advancing through that chamber.

Gov. Rick Scott backs the Senate version that would place limits on how much universities could raise tuition rates.
